A free VPN has to pay for its servers somehow. The honest ones do it with a paid plan and keep the free plan limited; the dishonest ones sell your data or show you ads. These are the free plans we would use, what each one limits, and why none of them gives you a Saudi server. More on the risks: the real cost of free VPN apps.
| Free plan | Data | Countries | Devices | Saudi server |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Unlimited | 10 (assigned, not chosen) | 1 | No (paid plans only) | |
| 10 GB a month (2 GB without email) | 10 | Unlimited | No | |
| 2 GB a month | Same as paid | Unlimited | No | |
| VPN Gate | Unlimited | Volunteer servers | — | None listed today |
Proton VPN Free
Proton’s free plan has no data limit and no ads, on one device. You connect to servers in 10 countries (the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada and the US), but the app picks the server for you. The Stealth protocol, which helps on networks that block VPNs, works on the free plan. Proton is Swiss, and Securitum has audited its no-logs policy every year since 2022.

Get Proton VPN Free from Proton’s own site or your app store.
Windscribe Free
Windscribe gives 10 GB a month once you confirm an email address (2 GB without), in 10 countries, with no ad networks. Its Stealth and WStunnel modes help on restrictive networks. Windscribe uses no virtual locations, so there is no Saudi server.

TunnelBear Free
TunnelBear’s free plan is 2 GB a month, enough for messages and maps but not video. Its apps are the simplest here, and Cure53 has audited it every year since 2016.
VPN Gate: free, but not private
VPN Gate is an academic project of the University of Tsukuba in Japan, run on volunteers’ servers. It costs nothing and needs no account, but its own policy says it keeps connection logs, including your IP address, for three months or more and can give them to police and courts. Treat it as a way around a blocked network, not as privacy.

Free trials of paid VPNs
- NordVPN: a 7-day trial through the app on 1- and 2-year plans, and a 3-day trial for first-time Android users on Google Play.
- Surfshark: 7 days on up to 3 devices, on 12- and 24-month plans.
- ExpressVPN: a trial on iPhone and Android through the app stores; a payment method is needed.
- Private Internet Access: 7 days for first-time mobile users subscribing through the app stores.
- CyberGhost: 24 hours on Windows and Mac without payment details, 3 days on Android and 7 days on iPhone.
A trial usually needs a card and turns into a paid plan unless you cancel in time. The 30- to 45-day money-back guarantees are often the safer way to try a paid VPN.
